Located in Geneva, Illinois |

Windmill City Quilts is located
near historic
downtown Geneva, IL. We recently closed our downtown storefront
and have relocated to the Underground Quilt Shop as part of our Online
Storefront.
Geneva with a population of just under
20,000 is located 45 minutes west of Chicago's Sears Tower. Geneva was first
incorporated as a city in 1887. Early Geneva was well known in the Fox River
valley region as a quaint, charming historic town. Today the
city still has this appeal.
Downtown Geneva boasts a marketplace
of over 100 specialty shops nestled in historic storefronts and
charming Victorian style homes. Visitors to Geneva will discover
one-of-a-kind gifts, unique clothing, distinctive art, home
accessories, antiques, jewelry and more. Windmill City Quilts is
proud to be a part of this diverse and delightful shopping experience. |

The energy behind our
windmill
|
 |
Windmills
generate energy. At Windmill City Quilts things work a
little differently. Instead of a windmill powering a machine
we have the energy of five ladies providing the power that runs
Windmill City Quilts.
For the next few weeks we will
introduce you to the women behind the windmill.

Behind our Windmill we have Pat. Pat grew up in Flint
Michigan. She moved to Illinois in 1980, and for the past 13
years has lived in Batavia, IL. She worked as a mainframe
computer programmer for Central Michigan Bank & Trust, and The
Harris Bank.
When Pat was about 7 years old she
learned to sew doll clothes. She learned to sew from her
mother. Mom taught Pat to sew and taught her sister to cook.

Pat has been married for 22 years and
has one child. In her spare
time she loves to quilt (prefers working with bright colors) and
reads mystery books. She also teaches archery for the
Naperville Park District.
Pat has worked at Windmill City Quilts
for one year.

Behind our windmill we have Deb.
She has been a part of Windmill City
Quilts for 4 years. Deb was hired by the owner before the
previous owner and has seen the store move from Batavia (nicknamed
The Windmill City) to the current shop location in downtown
Geneva, IL.
Prior to this, Deb worked in various
retail
positions for places like Wal-Mart, Gold Circle, and McDonald's
Hamburgers. Unlike the traditional behind the counter
position you may imagine at McDonald's Deb was employed in Public
Relations giving tours for small groups and taking McDonald's on
the road to schools and events.
Deb has been a resident of Batavia for
a little less than 20 years, having grown up in Buffalo, NY and
moved with her husband's career to Louisiana, Tennessee and now
Illinois.
Deb first caught the sewing bug in
Middle School, making clothes and gifts for friends and family.
About a year before she first came to work for Windmill City
Quilts she learned to quilt and now this is her passion.
Deb has been married for 30 years and
has 3 children ages 13 to 20.

Introducing Barb
Barb has worked for Windmill City Quilts
for about a year and a half now. Barb started working
for the store not long after it relocated to Geneva.
In 1975 Barb moved to what seemed
at the time to be the wide open area of St. Charles, IL.
There she raised a family and now enjoys her extended family
and 8 grand children.
Shortly after moving to the area
Barb got a job with Wallace Computer Services (now RR
Donnelley) with one goal in mind, earning enough money to buy
a snow blower. Barb still has this purpose driven
characteristic about her.

During our first summer, a desire
to create a unique product that Windmill City Quilts could
offer during the Geneva Festival of the Vine Barb created our
Wine Bottle Bags.
Barb makes her own greeting cards
and enjoys the WTTW Create Channel on cable TV (Channel 242 on
Comcast Cable in our area).
Her favorite color is blue and her
first car was a used 1953 Chevy. Naturally it was blue
and white.

Introducing Hope Hope is the most recent addition to our
staff at Windmill City Quilts. While joining the group in June
after a little more than a year away from the store, Hope was part of
the original Windmill City Quilts staff when it first opened in
Batavia.
Hope was born in northern Kentucky.
At age 8 she learned the art of sewing. For several years sewing
was just a hobby for Hope. After her wedding Hope and her new
husband had moved to northern Ohio and she developed a new talent ~
quilting.
Quickly Hope developed into a skilled
quilter and soon began teaching others to quilt. Hope has been
teaching quilting for twenty years now. You have the opportunity
to meet Hope by signing up to take one of the half dozen classes she
will be teaching over the next couple months.
In addition to teaching quilting classes
Hope made the time to raise 3 children and now enjoys a 3 year old
grandson too. This spring Hope and her husband celebrated their
25th wedding anniversary.
Hope
is a teaching assistant for the St. Charles Public School system, and
an avid gardener.
Please stop into the store and ask to meet
Hope or sign up for her classes today.

Meet the Owner |

On May 1st, 2007 Nanette
Eckley took over as the owner of Windmill City Quilts. Nan and her husband Joe
have been married for 19 years and they have three children. When she was in
high school she began sewing on her sister’s machine making clothes for the two
of them.
Following high school while working
in downtown Chicago Nan continued sewing for fun. When Nan became a mother she
made the choice to devote most of her time to being a stay at home mom. It was
at this point in life that sewing took on a bigger purpose.
Beginning by sewing bridesmaid
dresses, and expanding into bridal wear and accessories, sewing became her
profession. For the past dozen years her focus was custom made window
treatments. But recreational sewing for her family and friends as well as
weekend quilting was her relaxation time. Early on in her sewing career Nan
worked as an instructor at a sewing school for kids. Over the years she has
taught students from early elementary to adults.
Nan’s vision for the future of
Windmill City Quilts includes several of the areas she has come to enjoy. The
focus will continue to be quilting fabrics, notions, patterns and
accessories. Additionally the store will carry
punch-needling, and sewing machines with the addition of window treatments. Classes
will be offered throughout the year as well. As her customers already know, Nan
is always open to your suggestions, so if there is anything you would like to
see at the store, just ask.
Contact Nan by
email or phone.
